What is Expanded Learning?
Expanded learning refers to after-school, summer, and intersession learning programs designed to support students' academic, social, emotional, and physical needs through hands-on, engaging experiences.
Resilience Corps Associates
We are looking for professional, reliable, and passionate individuals who want to gain experience in the expanded learning field by working with students in grades K-8. This position will support expanded learning programs during the 2025-26 academic year.
These are paid, part-time positions beginning August 2025 and ending June 2026. The San José Public Library Foundation will provide a competitive hourly wage, on-the-job training, and professional development opportunities.
Program Timeline
- Application Period: May 27 - July 3
- Program Start Date: August 4, 2025
- Program End Date: June 2026
- Mandatory Orientation: August 4th - August 8th, 2025
- Work Schedule: After-school hours, Monday-Friday, approximately 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM
- Weekly Commitment: Minimum 15 hours per week, not to exceed 20 hours per week

Professional Development Workshops
Associates are required to attend monthly professional development workshops designed to support career growth. Associates will be paid for attending these workshops. Workshops will cover:
- Resume building and interview skills
- Financial literacy
- Career exploration
- Education-focused content and best practices
Partner Organizations
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley -- Support K-8 grade students with homework, sports, and arts in after-school programs.
- Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County – Provide homework help, academic enrichment, and fun activities for K-6 students.
- Mount Pleasant Elementary School District After School (MPAS) -- Assist K-6 students with homework and enrichment activities at school sites.
- San José Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) -- Support K-8 grade students with homework, sports, and arts in after-school programs.
- San José Public Library -- Support K-8 students in literacy, STEM, and art programs, and help design and lead expanded learning activities at select library branches across the city.
- Think Together -- Help K-6 students with academic enrichment and structured activities at school sites.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide homework assistance, academic enrichment, technology education, and recreation activities using curriculum, materials, and best practices provided by the program provider.
- Ensure student safety by following CDC (Centers for Disease Control) public health and safety guidelines and best practices.
- Participate in monthly professional development workshops.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a San José resident (proof of San José address required)
- Must be between the ages of 18-30
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Must provide negative TB test results
- Must provide COVID-19 vaccine verification or an approved medical/religious exemption
- Must be able to commit to the full program term: August 2025 - June 2026
- Must be available for orientation: August 4-8, 2025
- Must be available to work after-school hours, Monday to Friday, between approximately 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
- Must be available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, not to exceed 20 hours per week
Preferred Qualifications
- Passion for education, early childhood development, and community service
- Strong communication and leadership skills or a willingness to actively develop these skills
- Ability to take direction and follow through with assigned tasks and responsibilities
- Priority will be given to applicants who are:
- low-income, former foster youth, justice-involved, unemployed, not currently enrolled in higher education, first-generation college student, youth who are engaged with the mental health or substance use system, and youth who are unhoused, formerly unhoused, housing-insecure, or at risk of becoming unhoused.
This job program is funded through the Resilience Corps Initiative at the City of San Jose and the California Volunteers Youth Service Corps. Positions are provided and coordinated by the San Jose Public Library Foundation.
